Abstract
Vocabulary is essential for effective communication and comprehension. Teaching vocabulary is crucial, as words form the basis of language. Effective teaching methods help students master vocabulary, learned either deliberately or incidentally. At SMPN 3 Sutojayan, Blitar, eighth-grade students faced difficulties with vocabulary learning, particularly for understanding recount texts. Their average score on a recount text block test was 54.45, it was below the school's standard of 75.00. They struggled with defining words, finding synonyms and antonyms, and using appropriate vocabulary in the context. Lack of enthusiasm for learning English was another issue. Students became bored with repetitive methods and unengaging media. Quizizz Paper Mode, an innovative tool using QR Code images for offline quizzes, can address this. It promotes face-to-face interaction and engagement through multimedia elements, enhancing motivation and effectiveness in learning English.
The study utilized pre-experimental research especially, one group pretest posttest design. The subject of the study was 8B class at SMPN 1 Sutojayan Blitar, which consists of 22 students that was by purposive sampling method. To gain the data, the researcher distributed pre-tests and post-tests. The test was tried to the different students with the same level to ensure validity and reliability. The gained data was analyzed by using SPSS 25 to measure the effectiveness.
The finding revealed that there was an incredible increase of the students’ vocabulary score from 59.20 in the pretest to 84.74 in the posttest. In addition, the paired sample t-test results showed the value of 0.000. It was below less than 0.05. It means that Quizizz Paper Mode was effective to enhance the students’ vocabulary achievement especially used for understanding a recount text. From that result, it is recurred for the teacher to apply Quizizz Paper Mode as an alternative media to enhance the students’ vocabulary achievement and to should technology limitation in the classroom.
