Abstract

The low mastery of narrative writing among junior high school students
remains a persistent challenge in English learning. Students often struggle with idea
development, vocabulary use, and structuring their stories coherently. To address
this issue, the present study implemented Story-Based Learning (SBL) as an
alternative pedagogical approach to stimulate students’ engagement and improve
their writing performance. The purpose of this study was to explore how SBL is
implemented in enhancing students' narrative writing and to investigate students’
responses to its use.
This study employed a qualitative case study method. The participants were
30 eighth-grade students and one English teacher from SMPN 1 Wonotirto. Data
was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research
followed several stages including pre-observation, SBL treatment during writing
classes, and post-observation reflection. The data were analyzed using the Miles
and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion
drawing.
The findings revealed that the implementation of SBL involved contextual
storytelling, audiovisual media, collaborative scaffolding, and personalized
feedback. Students responded positively both cognitively and effectively. They
demonstrated better understanding of narrative structures, increased confidence,
and motivation in writing. The learning process was more interactive, and students
showed improved creativity and independence. The use of SBL successfully
supported the development of their narrative writing skills. In conclusion, SBL
proved to be an effective instructional strategy for enhancing students' narrative
writing. Teachers are encouraged to integrate storytelling elements in writing
instruction to foster creativity and engagement. Students should utilize stories to
enrich their writing ideas, while future researchers may explore the application of
SBL in other genres or educational levels to broaden its impact.
