Abstract

This research aims to identify the difficulties experienced by students in understanding recount text, describe the methods used by teachers to overcome these problems, analyze interactions between students and teachers in the classroom, and evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies implemented to improve student understanding. With a qualitative approach and single case study method, this research involved teachers, school principals and class VIII students. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews and documentation.
The research results show that class VIII students face several difficulties in understanding recount text, including challenges with new vocabulary, long sentences separated by commas, text structure, and affixing words. In particular, students have difficulty with unfamiliar vocabulary, long sentences that interfere with understanding, and the organization of events in the text.
To overcome this problem, teachers apply several strategies. In facing vocabulary difficulties, students are asked to read the text repeatedly and look for the meaning of unfamiliar words in the dictionary. When faced with long sentences separated by commas, students are taught to divide the sentence into shorter parts, interpret each part, and understand its context in the story. To help understand the structure of the text, the teacher provides a detailed explanation, while for words with affixes, the teacher provides relevant examples regarding prefixes and suffixes.

The implementation of this strategy creates a positive and active class atmosphere, thus contributing to increasing students' understanding of the material presented. The research results show that the method applied by the teacher is effective in increasing students' understanding of recount text.
