Abstract

This study was motivated by students’ challenges in understanding listening materials, particularly due to unfamiliar accents and low intrinsic motivation. At SMA Negeri 1 Srengat, these issues were addressed by integrating the British Council Website into listening comprehension lessons. The platform provides structured, authentic listening content suited for teenage learners, offering a valuable alternative to traditional methods. This research aimed to explore how the British Council Website was implemented in classroom instruction and how students responded to it during listening activities.
This research employed a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with an English teacher and selected students, and supporting documentation. The participants included one English teacher and students of class X-11 at SMA Negeri 1 Srengat during the 2024/2025 academic year. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of analysis, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. To guide the interpretation of the data, key stages such as Reception, Comprehension, and Interpretation were adapted from Rost’s neurological listening process framework.
The findings indicated that while students initially faced difficulties, they gradually adapted by applying strategies such as repeated listening, peer collaboration, and identifying unfamiliar vocabulary for translation. The use of pre-listening activities and scaffolding techniques by the teacher also played a critical role in improving students’ comprehension and engagement. Most students expressed positive impressions of the platform, especially appreciating its authentic content and interactive exercises that allowed them to monitor their own progress.
In conclusion, the British Council Website was found to be effective in supporting listening comprehension instruction at SMA Negeri 1 Srengat. Its use promoted student motivation, independent learning strategies, and contextual understanding of spoken English. Teachers are encouraged to integrate similar digital platforms alongside scaffolded instruction to enhance listening outcomes. Future researchers may explore comparative or quantitative studies to assess its impact more broadly across different educational settings.
