Development: A Case Study of 10th Grades at SMK Islam 2 Wlingi. Thesis, English

Low mastery of English vocabulary remains a challenge among vocational
high school students, particularly in the 10th-grade TSM class at SMK Islam 2
Wlingi. Students encounter difficulties in pronunciation, spelling, and
understanding words with multiple meanings. To address this issue, the vocabulary
book was used as a learning medium to support vocabulary development. This study
aimed to explore how the vocabulary book was implemented in the learning process
and to investigate students' responses toward its use. This study employed a
qualitative approach using a case study design.
The research involved one English teacher and three students with varying
proficiency levels (high, medium, and low). Data were collected through
interviews, classroom observations, and documentation, conducted from November
2024 to June 2025. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, following the
stages of data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing as proposed by Miles and
Huberman. The results showed that the vocabulary book was applied through stages
such as vocabulary listing, reading contextual texts, making sentences, quizzes, and
assessments. Students responded positively, indicating increased motivation,
deeper understanding, and better retention of vocabulary. Variations in engagement
were observed according to students’ ability levels, with higher-level students
demonstrating more initiative and independence.
In conclusion, the use of the vocabulary book was found to be effective in
supporting vocabulary development among vocational students. Teachers are
encouraged to adopt vocabulary books to foster consistent vocabulary practice. For
students, vocabulary books can serve as a useful tool for independent learning.
Further research is recommended to explore its application in different educational
settings and with a broader range of learners.
