Vocabulary mastery is the main foundation for students before mastering a foreign language such as English. Many students find it difficult to memorize and understand the meaning of foreign language vocabulary. To address this issue, digital flashcards like AnkiApp are increasingly popular compared to conventional flashcards. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using AnkiApp in improving vocabulary mastery among Junior High School students.
This study employed a quantitative method with a two-group pretest and posttest model, involving 8C and 8D grade students at SMPN 1 Sanankulon. The data collection instrument was a vocabulary test administered before and after the treatment using AnkiApp. The test was based on the "English for Nusantara" Grade 8 student book, specifically Chapter 5 "Embrace Yourself". Class 8C, the control group, used the textbook for learning vocabulary, while class 8D, the experimental group, used AnkiApp.
The results indicated significant improvements in student learning outcomes after the treatment. The Mann-Whitney test revealed that the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis is accepted. This means that AnkiApp is an effective tool for enhancing vocabulary mastery. Teachers are encouraged to integrate AnkiApp into their vocabulary instruction, and further research with a larger sample is recommended to explore the factors influencing the success of AnkiApp in vocabulary learning.
